Should I buy a Heat Pump for my Edmonton Home?
Have you been hearing about heat pumps more and more?
The Federal Government has been offering large rebates on heat pump installations, as they continue to encourage Canadian residents to make their homes more efficient. There are very good reasons to consider one for your home.
1. Not a new product
Heat pumps have been around for decades. The tried and tested product is used around the world.
Heat pumps look just like an air conditioner, and largely perform exactly like one. The difference with a heat pump, is that they have a reverse valve that can produce heat when the weather is cold. Even at very cold outdoor temperatures, there is heat in the outside air. The Heat pump is able to transfer outdoor heat into your home.
2. Uses renewable resources
The major advantage with a heat pump is that it runs on a renewable resource, electricity. As solar panels become more common, the heat pump becomes more and more attractive. This is great for the environment, and great for the pocket book.
Is it worth it?
The debate with buying a heat pump really boils down to efficiencies. If we pay less upfront for an entry level model, it will be expensive to run or will use too much energy. Paying more up front, and getting a model that is efficient, will allow you to use the heat pump without concerns of the electricity costs.
A heat pump is the direction that the industry is going. Furnace manufacturers are working hard to build better heat pumps capable of heating your home in the coldest of temperatures. Lennox currently offers the most efficient heat pump on the market, the Signature Series SL25XPV. This model currently has a $5000 rebate offered from the Canadian federal Government (At the time of writing). With this rebate, the highest end model currently is around the cost of a mid-range product. Now is the time to purchase a heat pump!
At this time a secondary heat source is needed in our climate here in Alberta. The Lennox SLP99V has a smart hub that allows us to program whether the heat pump gets priority or not. This system gives you complete control to use natural gas or electricity to produce the primary heat. Either option (gas or electricity) will use the most efficient product available.
