Should I Repair or Replace My AC?
So, let’s face it – In Edmonton, we only use our AC’s for about half the year, or less. This summer has been kind of cold! However, we have had some hot days and we are certainly expecting more hot days to come! (Last year, we had more days over 30 C than ever before!)
Are you running your AC, today? Have you noticed any deficiencies? Can you use a tweak or is it time to replace?

How is your air conditioner holding up?
Many people wonder if their old AC can make it *one more season*. (Spoiler Alert – If you’re wondering that, it might be time to replace it!)
Here are three factors to consider that may help you when deciding what to do:
Repair or Replace?
- How old is it?
If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, newer technology is most likely quieter and more efficient. Upgrading might mean saving you operating costs, as well as the environment! Upgrading might mean not hearing or feeling your unit, when it kicks on and off. Most ACs should last at least 15 years. How old is your AC?
- Does it need repairs?
If you’re considering whether to replace or to repair, consider the cost of repair compared with buying a new unit. If the repair is in the $100’s or $1000’s you may wish to put that into a new unit. Does your coolant need a top up or a recharge? In considering the age, also consider the type of coolant you’re using. Older units used R22. However, this has been replaced with R410. If you need to recharge your R22, this could be very expensive.
- It’s working – Is your home comfortable?
So, your AC is working. How does your home feel? Are you getting the sleep you need? Is your home still too hot? Are you muggy? Feeling stuffy? Your AC might be too small for your home. Even if it is the right size, if your AC isn’t doing the job, let’s get you a system that works!
